How to Use Essential Oils

How to use essential oils

With the popularity of essential oils increasing lately, you’ve probably wondered, well how do I use them?  There are many varied uses of essential oils for emotional and physical wellness. They can be used a single oil at a time or in complex blends.  But there are basically three methods of use, aromatic (smell them), topical (put on skin) and internal (ingestion them).

How to use essential oils. Ever wonder what to do with essential oils? Here are the three best ways to use essential oils.Aromatic

Our sense of smell is very powerful, in fact, it is the only sense that has a direct connection to the brain.  You’ve probably experienced a scent  that has conjured up emotions and memories. This is because smell information is sent to key areas of the brain involved in learning and memory.  Essential oils are used in Aromatherapy, a practice of using oils to enhance psychological and physical well-being. Certain essential oils, when diffused, can be very stimulating, while others can be calming and soothing. Diffusing essential oils can also cleanse and purify the air of unwanted odors.

Topical

Essential oils can also be absorbed through the skin, where they travel through the bloodstream and can promote whole-body healing. Essential oils can be safely applied topically, but some oils may need to be diluted with a carrier oil such as coconut oil.  A few drops of essential oils can be added to a warm bath.  Essential oils can also be added to lotion or moisturizer then applied to the skin.

Internal

Certain essential oils, such as basil, peppermint, cinnamon, ginger, lemon, fennel to name a few, have a deep culinary history and can be used as dietary supplements for wellness. When ingested, essential oils enter the bloodstream through your GI system, then transported throughout your body. Some ways to use essential oils internally are in recipes for cooking and baking, in your drinking water, in smoothies tea or other drinks.  Remember essential oils are much more potent than dried or fresh herbs and spices.  Please follow labels and other professional guidelines for dosing to avoid toxicity.

Essential oils are a great way of taking care of your own and your family’s health. Whether you’re applying essential oils topically, enjoying the aromatic benefits through diffusing, or taking essential oils internally, you will be sure to experience the positive effects.
