Eating healthy and exercising is a great way to feel good and reduce your risk for disease but what about the items you use every day that come into contact with your biggest organ…your skin? Ever read the back of your shampoo bottle? It’s not pretty. What about your lotion? Buying products without the chemicals can be hard to find and expensive. The following recipes will help you achieve a more natural life without the harmful chemicals. Since you’re making it yourself, it’s affordable not to mention it works well and smells good too!

DIY Natural Deodorant
Deodorant has many nasty ingredients. Some studies suggest aluminum-based antiperspirants may increase the risk for breast cancer. If you’ve tried natural deodorants before and they didn’t work well (I can attest to that), try the recipe below. This works great and is so much better than the natural deodorants you can buy in the store.
Mix together and store in any container of your choice. You can also refill a used push up canister but you would have to keep in in the fridge for it to work.
DIY Natural Body Wash
Bar soap takes longer to make so I opt for liquid body wash and absolutely love it! Many of the recipes online are for making four ounces of soap and that would require you to make it quite often, especially if you have a large family. I recommend the 16 oz glass bottles for this recipe.
15 tablespoons of liquid Castille Soap
15 tablespoons of raw honey
2 tablespoons of oil (you can use castor oil or olive oil or half of each)
50 drops of essential oils of your choice (rosemary and peppermint is our fav)
Mix the ingredients and put it in a squeeze top bottle.
DIY Natural Lotion
1 cup of pure aloe vera gel
1/2 cup of oil (use sweet almond or grapeseed)
1/2 cup of beeswax pellets
1 tsp of pure vitamin E oil
15 drops of essential oils of your choice (there are so many possibilities)
Mix the gel, essential oils, and vitamin e oil together and set aside. Add the grapeseed or sweet almond oil to the beeswax and melt. The best way to melt it is putting in a glass container or measuring cup in a pot of water to boil. Once the beeswax is melted, take off the stove and add it to the blender. Once the wax is cool, add the aloe gel mixture SLOWLY to the blender. Keep blending until you reach a desired consistency. Store them in jars and whatever is not going to be used in a couple of weeks must be stored in the refrigerator.
DIY Natural Toothpaste
Toothpaste has lots of harmful ingredients. Check out your tube of toothpaste and see if you recognize the ingredients. This recipe is very simple and takes minutes to make (and is insanely cheap). You can make the pepperminty as you want. If you don’t like the salty taste, leave out the salt.
2/3 cup of baking soda
1 tsp of fine sea salt
15 drops of peppermint essential oils
Mix the baking soda, salt and peppermint oil first. Then add the water slowly until you reach a desired consistency. You can store in a little container with a lid.
These recipes are simple enough for your kids to make! I love getting into the shower knowing my family isn’t putting a long list of chemicals on their bodies. Have the ingredients on hand so when you run out, you can make more quickly. The lovely thing is you can make any scent you want if you have essential oils on hand. Let your kids choose which one they like the best. Many people think they don’t have time to make their own products, but these recipes are simple and don’t require much time.
