Where to Buy Essential Oils

In our efforts to strive for balance and maintain a healthy lifestyle, we have discovered the awesome power of essential oils.  We frequently use essential oils for a variety of purposes, from self-care to home cleaning products to home remedies and relieving stress.  We’ve researched the many health benefits of essential oils. In our research on where to buy essential oils, we found that many oils that you find in stores are not therapeutic grade oils.  This simply means the oil may not be 100% pure and may even contain some icky stuff.   Most of these oils are for aromatherapy only and should NOT be used topically or internally.

If you don’t know what Essential oils are and how to use them, see our What are Essential Oils?  and How to Use Essential Oils.

Why We Use Essential Oils

So here’s the deal, the FDA highly restricts what we can say publicly about essential oils. Essential oils are considered dietary supplements and not required to get approval from the FDA.   But if someone makes a claim that an oil has remedied or cured an ailment then the government considers this a drug and therefore needs to be regulated by the FDA.  That’s why you will see this disclaimer on essential oil bottles, “*These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent disease.”  These restrictions make it hard to share in detail all the benefits that we’ve received from the oils. But here’s what we can say.

  • Promotes emotional wellness and eases anxiety
  • Aids in sleep, relaxation and meditation
  • Helps support a healthy immune system
  • Aids in occasional muscle aches and pains
  • Helps respiratory function
  • Keeps bugs away
  • Helps with digestion

These are just a handful of the ways that we use and have benefited from essential oils.  We could keep going but this post would get way long.

There are no regulations on oils in the U.S., so you must be very careful to know the sourcing and policies of an essential oil company. Many essential oil companies purchase their oils from oil brokers. Those that do, are not actively involved in harvesting the plants and producing the oils.  They also can claim that their oil is pure even if there is only 5% of the actual plant’s essential oil in the bottle.

So for us,  it comes down to trust.

Why We Chose dōTerra

doTerra sources the plants for its oils from indigenous areas, meaning that they are grown and sourced from areas of the world that are their natural habitat. Plants that grow in their natural habitat are naturally stronger and provide a more potent oil.   dōTerra partners with growers all over the world to produce the purest therapeutic oils possible. dōTerra grows in 40 countries, and they grow where the best climate and geography is for that specific plant.

dōTerra oils are guaranteed 100% pure; they are never diluted or cut. To ensure the quality, purity and efficacy of their oils, dōTerra has all of their oils tested by a 3rd party.  There are no pesticides or chemicals in their oils. If they find an adulteration to the oil they will not ship it.

So for us,  it comes down to trust.  And yes, dōTerra oils are a little pricier than generic oils that you can buy at a grocery store for all the reasons above.  All the time and money put into testing.  We don’t know about you, but we rather pay a little more to ensure purity.

Another huge reason we chose doTerra is their philanthropic arm of the company, the Healing Hands Foundation.  It matters to us to be part of a company that chooses to do good in the world and that we get to be a part of that.

  1. Have been very curious about Do Terra oils for a long time. I use a diffuser currently but only with more inexpensive oils. I have heard many good things about DoTerra.
